During a close flyby of the planet Venus in July 2020, NASA s Parker Solar Probe detected something odd.
As it dipped just 833 kilometers (517 miles) above the Venusian surface, the probe s instruments recorded a low-frequency radio signal - a telltale sign that Parker had skimmed through the ionosphere, a layer of the planet s upper atmosphere.
This was the first time an instrument had been able to record direct
in situ measurements of Venus upper atmosphere in nearly three decades, and the data recorded gives us a new understanding of how Venus changes in response to cyclic changes in the Sun. I was just so excited to have new data from Venus, said astronomer Glyn Collinson of NASA s Goddard Space Flight Center.

EDF Renewables Ireland has began construction of three new solar farms with a total capacity of 17MW.
This includes Coolroe Solar Farm (5MW), which is located in Coolroe, Ballycullane, Co. Wexford; Blusheens Solar Farm (8MW) in Killinick, Co. Wexford and Curraghmartin Solar Farm (4MW) in Curraghmartin, Carrigeen, Co. Kilkenny.
They are the first sites the French energy giant has begun in Ireland since it acquired 100% of Wexford Solar in October 2020. This included eight solar projects with a capacity of about 100MW, including four that were consented and were successful in the first RESS auction.
Blusheens, Coolroe and Curraghmartin make up the bulk of those successful bids, along with Stamullen (5.8 MW) in County Meath.

Danish solar PV business Obton has announced it is to double its investment in Irish solar partner Shannon Energy.
This brings its portfolio and pipeline of projects to a total value of €750 million (£649 million), with Obton also increasing its ambition to reach 1GW of capacity in Ireland by 2026.
Anders Marcus, CEO of Obton, said they were “delighted” by the expansion, which represented an enhanced commitment to the Irish market.
“Our partnership with Shannon Energy has successfully facilitated our investment in the Irish market and we look forward to continuing to expand the role of solar as part of the Irish government’s ambitious objective of having 70% renewable energy by 2030.”
